Buying Produce: How to Choose What’s in Season

How do you pick a ripe watermelon, a fragrant melon, a tomato that actually tastes of something? Practical tips from behind the stand.

Buying Produce: How to Choose What’s in Season

Produce bought in season is both cheaper and better. Here are the answers to the questions we get asked most.

Choosing a watermelon

The clearer the yellow patch underneath, the longer it ripened in the field. It should feel heavy for its size and sound hollow when tapped.

With melon, follow your nose

A sweet scent at the stem is the most reliable sign of ripeness. A melon with no smell will have no taste.

Tomatoes

Glossy and firm means a long shelf life; a strong smell at the stem and a matt skin means flavour.

Leafy greens

Buy in the morning, eat the same day. A yellowing leaf means it was picked yesterday.

Our stand is restocked every morning — we sell what arrived that day.

Shall we put the tea on?
